The Point of Interest is a major gameplay mechanic in Last Train Home.

Overview[]

Points of Interest are locations on the overhead map that can be visited and interacted with by your soldiers. Most of them offer activities that can be initiated by your soldiers.

There are four main types of PoIs:

  • Villages and Train Stations usually harbor Merchants, who can be traded resources for money. On occasion, squads visiting villages may find that they have been abandoned[1] or massacred[2] (squad loses morale).
  • Abandoned Settlements, where cloth, coal, herbs, money and metal, as well as some consumables can be obtained.
  • Nature Locations, such as lakes, forests, timberlands and hunting grounds, are significant natural reservoirs that can be harvested for food, herbs and wood.
  • Combat Encounters involve a combat scenario with a series of objectives, where your soldiers partake in skirmishes.

Mechanics[]

A PoI can be found along the rail tracks, or on the overhead map, which can be visited by a squad. If the Train must pass through one, they get unlocked and can be re-visited at a later time.

Points of Interest offer activities that are either one-time or repeatable. In order to initiate these, a squad must travel there - gradually spending Stamina on the way - and reach its spot.

Each activity can have a stamina and/or time cost that the entirety of the squad must spend. While time simply means waiting on the map, Stamina is removed after the activity is complete. As long as the squad spends time commencing the activity, they are affected by Temperature.

When a PoI has no more activities to offer, it appears as ticked out on the map.

Outcome Report[]

  1. There was nothing there, Major, just ruins and old bones. If there ever was anything of value, it is long gone.
  2. I'm... I'm sorry, Major. It was terrible. So many bodies. Women, children... murdered, violated. Whoever is behind this, the Reds, the Whites, or some bandits... they are not human.
