Mysterious Family is a story mission in Chapter 6.

Part 1[]

Novo-Nikolaevsk[]

Captain Langer caught word that the Czechoslovak Provisional Government instructs him to pick up a family of high importance, who are to be transported to the very far city of Nizhneudinsk. While their background is shrouded in mystery, the Government insists on escorting them to safety.

In Yurga, the family awaits, led by a charismatic and stern women, who proclaims to be the mother of five children assisted by her spouse. She insists that they are to be transported without question, on behalf of an alleged government representative, Hynek Pergler. Although Langer opposes the idea, the family is sheltered on the train.

Novovostochniy[]

Lady Demidova causes a stir with her children, as one of the Legionnaires has made a lewd remark on the oldest daughter, Anastasia. Untolerated by the mother, she requests that the issue is to be resolved.

With mediation from Captain Langer, the soldier is talked to and things settle again. Langer however has a remark that the father is not treated by the children properly, having been slapped in the face in one occasion, raising his suspicion.

Achinsk[]

Captain Langer is found agitated and in a disheveled clothing. Upon your interest, he confesses that he had a row with the head of the Demidov family. Langer tells that they disagreed on having too many jokes about his 'wife', and he immediately clears himself, stating that he is a married man - although his wife is long left behind due to the conflict. He then reassures you that he can "fight his own battles", leaving you alone.

Part 2[]

Krasnoyarsk[]

Nearing the city, the train is brought to a sudden halt at a canyon, barely evading damage. According to reports, the Reds set up a barricade and attempted to vanquish the Train, but weren't enough in number and scattered. Captain Langer assesses that they may be building more barricades and they must be after the mysterious family: Alexei Demidov and his family; so he advises assembling a squad and clearing the track of any enemy encampments.

Part 3-4[]

With the barriers swept and cleared, the Train is free to travel forward.

As the soldiers return from the mission, gossip starts spreading that the Demidovs are in fact the Russian Tzar and his family. Captain Langer is only found later however, as some soldiers clamor over a dead Aleksei Demidov. Langer shares his assumption that the head of the family must have been poisoned with cyanide, presenting a flask with the scent of almond and a double-headed eagle printed on it.

A few cars away, Maria Davidova looks seemingly unshaken by her husband's death. With determination in her gaze, all she asks from the Legionnaires is to escort her and her children to Nizhneudinsk.

Part 5[]

Captain Langer approaches you with the intention of thinking the order through, which is to ferry the Demidov family to Nizhneudinsk.

If listened to, Langer tells you that if the gossips are true, then the Demidovs are very valuable to whichever side that may be entrusted. With the Imperial Army without leadership, the Tsar's influence must increasingly wane and therefore their authority is less and less in effect, so there may really be no shelter for the family.

Langer comes up with an alternate plan: have one of the Legionnaires escort the Demidovs to safety from the outskirts, rather than dropping them off at Nizhneudinsk station, so that neither the Reds, nor the Whites may have them. It is possible to think through whether the order is to be complied with.

Part 6[]

If chosen to be dropped off at Nizhneudinsk station, a White Army soldier approaches the wagon with an unrefined manner. After Captain Langer addresses his demeanour, the soldier identifies himself as Alexander Botkin and asks for Demidova.

The Madam is clearly suspicious about the soldier's motives, who is clearly in shock seeing only six members of the family. Upon the Madam's request, Botkin reveals that he is going to escort the Demidov family to Yekaterinburg.

Just as they leave, Demidova is addressed by Langer that she is neither an ordinary person, nor the mother of the children. She persists with a firm gaze, but she turns to him one final time. She asks about Alexei's killer and immediately shows a bottle full of cyanide, telling that one of the children committed the murder. Then Langer holds her hands for a moment before everyone leaves the scene.

When reaching the outskirts of Nizhneudinsk, Langer tells you it's time to drop the
